“Messin’ With Mister T” makes best of 2015 in Downbeat

Hello friends: Just was in the studio recording a special project with the Stryker / Slagle Band Expanded to be called “Routes” on Strikezone Records. It tells Steve’s and my journey so far and the Routes we took to get here. We’ve been playing together for 30 years now and this recording is going to be special with new music and great Slagle arrangements for 4 horns! Look for it in early 2016… THIS JUST IN: “Messin’ with Mister T” picked as a Top Jazz Album of 2015 in Downbeat magazine, Critics and Readers Polls. I also made it into the guitar category in both polls. Thanks to Downbeat readers. It also is in the first round for a Grammy for Best Instrumental Jazz Album and Best Improvised Jazz Solo – Pieces of Dreams (Dave Stryker – soloist). For your consideration NARAS voters. “Messin’ with Mister T” made #1 on JazzWeek Radio chart and has been on the charts now for over 20 weeks. It’s also gotten great reviews in Downbeat (4 1/2 Stars), Jazz Times, Jazziz, Hot House and many others. You can order it right here on the site or download it at CD Baby Please check my itinerary page for my upcoming gigs. All the best and hope to see you soon! DS Here are some more nice recent quotes: “Messin’ With Mr. T” is an overdue, joyous homage to a master… One of the most satisfying records of the year. 4-1/2 Stars –Allen Morrison, DownBeat May 2015 Like Turrentine, Stryker is a perfect combination of accessible grooves, melodic expression, blues feeling and soul… Gospel-like joy throughout. –Owen Cordle, JazzTimes May 2015 Stryker’s multi-hued playing becomes a combustible force, a link to the blues of McDuff and Turrentine for sure, but also representing the state of the art in jazz guitar evolution… His playing is consummately beautiful, his choice of notes, Wes Montgomery -styled chordal runs, point-perfect solos and serious swing a joy framed by his well-chosen company. Surging through Stryker’s assorted gifts is his unique strength – a rock-bottom groove rare amid today’s jazz complexity sweepstakes. –Ken Micallef, New York City Jazz Record May 2015 …Reflects the solid mainstream – modern style and emotionally forthright commitment that has been a hallmark of Stryker’s playing for well over three decades. All ten guests seem inspired by the spirit of Mister T, playing with a direct, visceral feel for the material to produce what is one of the best recent all-star tribute albums. –George Kanzler, Hot House May 2015 One of the best of the year, you can quote me. –Bob Porter, WBGO Portraits in Blue
