Mulgrew was not only one of the finest pianists of his generation, he was a beautiful human being as well. He was an inspiration to us all by showing that you could not only be a ferocious player, but a kind, compassionate, and sharing teacher as well. I first heard Mulgrew when he was with Art Blakey and I was with Jack McDuff sharing a bill in Indianapolis. Later I heard him with Woody Shaw (with our mutual friend Tony Reedus on drums). From there he played with Tony Williams group, so he played with many of the greats, as well as having his own trios and his group “Wingspan” for many years. His CD “The Sequel” is one of my favorites. I was lucky enough to have the honor of having Mulgrew play on one of my early records “Guitar on Top”. From that day forward whenever he would introduce me to someone he would say something nice about me. That’s just the kind of man he was. Mulgrew will be missed in our jazz community and by his family and friends but his legacy of excellence and humanity will live on. Dave Stryker
